Hotel Kelowna November Adventure: 6 Family Events In & Out of Town
November gets a bad rap for being a dreary time of year, but, in fact, it is the perfect time to embark on a family adventure, especially here in the Okanagan. With many fun attractions and events taking place around the Valley, why not beat the crowds and the Christmas rush by booking a family suite at the centrally located Comfort Suites hotel in Kelowna and explore what this beautiful Valley has to offer. You’ll be sure to change your mind about November from now on.
Here are 6 suggestions of family events happening around the Okanagan this November:
1. Strap on Your Skates
Your kids can start working on their pirouettes and hockey moves with the first Family Skate of the season at the Kelowna Capital News Centre, Nov. 10 from 10 a.m. to noon. Proceeds from the event are going towards JoeAnna’s House, a home away from home for families travelling for care at Kelowna General Hospital. Don’t have skates or helmets? You can rent them at Play it Again Sports, located just down the road from the Comfort Suites Kelowna hotel.
2. Head up to Big White for Opening Day
Big White Ski Resort officially opens for the season on Nov. 22 and the Ridge Rocket Express chair is expected to start rolling at 8:45 a.m. To celebrate, the hill is having a party at the bottom of the chair entrance with free music, hot chocolate, and lots of giveaways. The Comfort Suites offers one of the best Kelowna hotel deals with its Stay and Ski Package, which includes two discounted lift tickets (plus any extra passes – additional charges apply) along with a night’s stay in one of our well-appointed suites.
3. See Scrooge in Whoville
Try to imagine the Cat in The Hat as Scrooge, or maybe the Grinch is more apt, and you get the idea for Theatre Kelowna’s presentation of A Seussified Christmas Carol, staging at the Rotary Centre for the Arts, downtown, Nov. 22-24 and 29-30 and at 7 p.m., with matinee performances Nov. 24 and 25 at 2 p.m. The show is described as a whimsical reinvention and mash-up of Dr. Seuss and Charles Dickens’ beloved stories and characters, using wacky Seuss-like rhymed couplets. Family tickets are available, while the Nov. 22 presentation is by a pay-as-you-go donation.
4. Celebrate Santa’s Arrival in Penticton
Santa is coming to the city of Penticton a little early. Your kids can celebrate his arrival by firetruck, no less, at Cherry Lane Shopping Centre Nov. 24 at 11 a.m. Santa will not only be posing for photos, your kids can enjoy free activities such as Christmas crafts, with Par-T-Perfect Sand Art and Sparkle Tattoos also participating in the fun. End the day back at one of the best Kelowna hotels with indoor pool and waterslide. You’ll also appreciate a soak in the hot tub!
5. Faire Thee Well
If you’d like to get some of your Christmas shopping done, plus have your kids entertained for the day, the 37th annual Children’s Christmas Faire at Kelowna’s Lakeside Waldorf School provides the perfect setting. Taking place Nov. 25 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., children’s activities include puppet shows, storytelling, sword making, candle dipping and a maple taffy pull. There will also be unique Christmas crafts and gifts, homemade treats, a food truck, and festive interludes.
5. Watch as Summerland Lights the Town
Just a 44-minute drive from Kelowna and the Comfort Suites, the quaint town of Summerland turns into a winter wonderland, complete with a spectacle of multi-coloured lights for its annual downtown Festival of Lights Nov. 30. The evening features live performances, a children’s stage and family zone, food trucks, interactive ice sculptures, a visit from Santa, and even rides aboard a mechanical bull! The fun continues with a dazzling fireworks show.
